In the word “transpersonal’’, the prefix ”trans” means “beyond”. As well as embracing a sense of something beyond the individual person it also includes the personal. This sense of other is found at the heart of both spiritual and artistic visions as a source of healing and inspiration.
Transpersonal Psychology is an umbrella term covering a number of related approaches, both Eastern and Western, which combine modern knowledge with ancient wisdom.
A transpersonal perspective can include the concept of a central core within every individual that is essentially spiritual in nature and seeks its most complete expression during each lifetime. C.J.Jung called this the “Self” and the journey to realise it the "Individuation" process.
The task of a transpersonal psychotherapist is to hold in awareness the client’s essential wholeness while staying alongside the client in the life struggles and difficulties that he or she is grappling with. This process can bring about healing and transformation.
This approach is concerned with accompanying the individual as they work to discover their own potential, which can be released as they find the source and reveal the depth of their own being. Experiences of trauma, loss and crisis can emerge in the process of healing. Transpersonal psychotherapy attends to the needs of body, mind, feelings and spirit. All aspects of a person’s experience are welcome.
I believe counselling and psychotherapy can help us make sense of what is happening in our lives, feel more in control, and help us grow into the people we would like to be. I also believe that healthy relationships are at the heart of the secret to leading a satisfying and fulfilling life. And I believe that everyone has a right to that life.
Transpersonal psychotherapy is an integrative approach with a holistic and spiritual dimension, I offer a variety of treatment methods, ranging from Psychodynamic Counselling over CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), TA (Transactional Analysis), Existential and Gestalt counselling to Jungian and Transpersonal concepts.
What is 'Transpersonal'?
As a transpersonal psychotherapist, I see myself as a companion on the client's therapeutic journey.
Often a crisis in life precipitates the desire to begin such a journey. Sometimes unhappiness and general dissatisfaction with life and/or relationships pre-empts seeking help through a difficult time.
I believe that everyone has a wiser, deeper self that knows what is required to unfold and develop. It is my task to shine the light of awareness and listen to what this deeper self wishes to manifest. As such I am as a midwife assisting emergence of that wisdom and knowledge, sometimes recognised as a more spiritual approach.
To facilitate such awareness, a safe space needs to be created through the therapeutic relationship - and by using creativity and imagination the 'essential self' can be heard.
Through creative work such as using dreams, writing, drawing, clay, and exploring intuition and visualisation, this deeper, wiser self emerges. Such connection can also be established working from a mind-body, holistic approach.
Counselling or Psychotherapy?
The difference between the two is endlessly debated! Either way, the healing process depends on a relationship of trust where the client feels safe enough to explore thoughts and feelings.
In my view, counselling can often be shorter term work than psychotherapy and more focused on solving the particular problem presented.
Psychotherapy tends to be longer term work when there is the opportunity of looking more deeply into your life and why some things are just not working for you.
A growing number of people are seeking help on their challenging journey of self-knowledge, understanding and personal development.
Counselling and Psychotherapy are talking 'treatments' used to treat mental, emotional and some psychiatric disorders. They help the person to understand and accept their strengths and weaknesses as well as what makes them feel positive or anxious. Identifying feelings and ways of thinking helps the person to cope with situations they find difficult and new ways of approaching them. This requires a trusting relationship between the person and the therapist and can last for weeks, months or sometimes years.
Psychotherapy or Counselling can be carried out on an individual basis, as part of a group or with your spouse or partner. During your sessions, you are encouraged to talk about yourself, your feelings and your situation/problem and as your therapist I am here to help you to find ways to tackle them. It can take place over a short period of time, between 6 to 12 sessions or over longer indefinite periods where problems can be addressed at a deeper level.
Different people have different needs in therapy and my approach is to use
appropriate techniques according to your specific problems. I use an
integrative approach that includes Cognitive Behavioural, Psychodynamic and
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy aims to help people change patterns of thinking or behaviour that are causing problems in their day to day lives. This is a structured approach with goals agreed at the outset and planned exercises carried out between sessions.
Psychodynamic Therapy involves me as your therapist listening to your experiences, exploring connections between current feelings/actions and past events. It can be especially useful in helping people with long term or recurring problems get to the root of their difficulties.
Transpersonal Therapy includes, and goes beyond the realm of psychology and emotions and explores deeper meaning and purpose to crisis and the problems we experience. It is based on the belief that through crisis we have the opportunity to grow and develop our full potential as human and spiritual beings.
How to begin To find out whether or not Counselling or Psychotherapy is right for you our first contact would be by Skype or email. We would briefly discuss confidentiality, why you want to come, how I might be able to help, fees and an appropriate appointment time.
The first session would consist of you telling me more about yourself and the difficulties you are facing, deciding whether or not I am the right therapist for you and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Our sessions are confidential and will not be discussed with anyone without your agreement unless there is a requirement by law to do so or if there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others. However, in the unlikely event that this might happen I would fully discuss the matter with you first.
